Abby Hinder's Service Project

 Issue

My issue is kids in school suffering from anxiety and depression. I want to try and help students be able to come to school feeling safe.  I think that teachers need to form a better bond with their students. Students should be able to go to their teachers about things that they need or problems that they are having.

Plan 

Step 1 - Write down a list of questions that I Could ask Mrs. Poppe. Questions like what do you already have and are you wanting to make it better.

Step 2 - Ask her the questions that I wrote down. We then will talk about ways to improve. Find a way to make my ideas happen.

Step 3 - We will go down to the thinking room. Look at the things we already have. Make a list of things that we could add.

Step 4 - I will talk to her about ways to get the kids closer to their teachers. Come up with bonding opportunities for the kids and teachers to do together.

Step 5 - We will talk to the teachers. Ask them if they like the ideas. Talk about ways to make  them happen. We will come up with times to have bonding time. Only start with kids that need it.

Step 6 - Have them do the bonding and then ask the teachers about how they think it went. Talk with the kids to see if they think it was a good time.

Step 7 - I will talk to Mrs. Poppe about how things went and if she thinks it is a good thing to continue . If so then we have more kids talk and bond with their teachers. If not then restart and find a new way to help the kids feel safe and happy at school.

What did you learn?

I have learned a lot about the topic that I picked for my issue paper. One thing that I have learned about it would be how many kids actually struggle with coming to school. Secondly is how much Mrs. Poppe works to help kids be calm and ok at school. She has fun things for students to do when they need to calm down. She has things such as games and fidget toys for them to fiddle with during class or in the hallway.

What would you have done differently?

If I had to do things differently I think that I would have came up with more information for her to look at and put into consideration. I would have liked to come up with more activities for the teachers to do with the student. I also would have liked to work with the kids myself so i could get to know more of the kids that go to the school.

What were your results?

It really helped some kids with getting to know their teachers more and to form a bond with them. They have been going to the teachers more about things that upset them. It gave Mrs. Poppe more ideas to add to what she already has.
